Who Needs a Netherlands Schengen Visa?

Your need for a visa depends on your nationality.

If you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country, you don't need a Schengen visa for a short visit to the Netherlands. If your passport isn't on that list — regardless of whether you're based in the UAE, Pakistan, or Kenya, you'll need to apply, even if you hold legal residence somewhere else.

You should also make sure that the Netherlands is the correct country for your application. If you plan to visit several Schengen countries, you cannot always choose the country you prefer. Your travel plan decides where you should apply.

Most applicants submitting through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi will have a digital photo taken on-site as part of the appointment, so you do not always need to arrive with a prepared photo. It is still useful to know the standard so your appearance and documents are consistent.

Be no more than six months old
Show your face clearly, looking straight at the camera
Use a plain, light background
Have good, even lighting with no strong shadows
Show a neutral facial expression

How to Apply for a Netherlands Schengen Visa From Dubai

The Netherlands Schengen visa Dubai process has several steps. You can also follow these steps if you live elsewhere in the UAE.

01

Check if You Need a Visa

Start by checking the visa rules for your nationality. An Emirati passport holder does not need a short-stay visa for the Netherlands. Other UAE residents may need one.

02

Make Sure You Should Apply Through the Netherlands

Check your full Schengen travel plan. If the Netherlands is the correct country for your visa application, continue with the Netherlands process.

03

Complete the Online Application Form

Complete your Schengen visa application form online, then print it and sign it. Do not use another person's form. Each online form receives its own unique code.

04

Prepare Your Documents

Collect all documents that apply to your trip. Check names, dates, bookings, and financial information. Make sure your documents tell the same story.

05

Book Your VFS Appointment

We help you choose an appointment slot at your local VFS Global centre, in the UAE, Pakistan, or Kenya, that works with your travel timeline. You can apply up to six months before your planned trip. It's a good idea to submit well ahead of your travel date.

06

Attend Your Appointment

You must attend the application appointment in person. At the appointment, you will: Submit your passport, Submit your documents, Answer questions about your trip, Provide biometrics, Pay the required fees, Receive a tracking reference.

Track Your Application

Visa types

Netherlands Schengen Visas by Travel Purpose

Your travel purpose affects the documents you need.

Visitor Visa

Choose tourism if you want to visit the Netherlands for a holiday, sightseeing, or leisure. You may need: Accommodation proof, Travel plan, Travel insurance, Financial proof, Employment or business documents.

Business Visa

Choose the business category if your trip involves business activities such as meetings, conferences, or training. This short-stay category covers business activities where a Dutch company does not pay you for employment in the Netherlands. You may also need an invitation or business-related documents.

Visiting Family or Friends

Use this purpose if you plan to visit family members or friends in the Netherlands. You may need extra documents from the person you plan to visit.

Entry Types

Single-Entry and Multiple-Entry Netherlands Schengen Visas

Single-Entry Visa

A single-entry visa lets you enter the Schengen Area one time. After you leave, you cannot use that same visa to enter again.

Multiple-Entry Visa

A multiple-entry visa lets you enter and leave the Schengen Area several times while the visa stays valid. You must still follow the stay limit. You cannot spend more than 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen Area.
The authorities decide the visa type and validity. Requesting a multiple-entry visa does not guarantee that it will be issued, although its validity may extend for several years.

The visa sticker confirms the number of permitted entries, validity dates, and allowed stay. Receiving a visa does not guarantee entry, as the final decision is made by border authorities.

Schengen Travel

Can You Visit Other Schengen Countries With a Netherlands Visa?

Yes. A valid Netherlands Schengen visa can allow travel to other Schengen countries. You must still follow the dates, number of entries, and stay period shown on your visa.
You should also apply through the correct Schengen country in the first place. If your trip includes several countries, check where you need to submit your application.
